In many ways we were tempted not to write anything at all about our Walnut Worktops, hoping that the pictures would tell the only real story.
But of course we have to say something about it because it's hard not to. We buy only Furniture Grade Hardwoods. I think that really is obvious from these Walnut photographs. But what isn't so obvious is just how specific we have been about where we buy our Walnut from, and from whom. In fact our Walnut for any of our worktops, staircases or furniture comes from just three companies and three locations. All of the Walnut is from the American Mid West - the Northern part, from Pennsylvania to Wisconsin. Here the full range of the four seasons is evident every year, and it is wihout doubt one of the main reasons for the beauty of the grain in our Walnut worktops. Close to the Canadian boarder, the contrast between the long hot summers and the absolutely freezing hard winters makes for the ideal growing conditions of American Black Walnut. Our Walnut worktops are available in three different styles and a whole range of different sizes. Not forgetting that our workshop can make pretty much anything to order. And if you need something really special, like a client who recently ordered a 6.2 metre Walnut worktop - yep, over 20 foot - then chances are we can get it made up in our mill in Ohio.
Our Single Wide Stave Walnut Worktops are made from long planks which run the entire length of the worktop and are edge glued. Rarely longer than 3 metres (as finding clean lumber this long without defects is very difficult), they are available in most sizes and almost any width.
A Two Join Walnut Plank Worktop is made from long planks which may have a maximum of two finger joints per length, and then edge glued. In effect it is midway between a Classic butchers block style and a wide single stave style worktop.
Our Classic Walnut Worktop is made from Walnut staves which are finger jointed (giving an immensely strong and stable join) and then edge glued to form a beautiful worktop.

Last year 197,000 acres of new hardwood forest was planted in North America - around four million trees. That's more than double the number felled for lumber; an outstanding example of positive environmental practice. American Black Walnut accounted for roughly two percent of that.
