Classic Walnut Butcher's Block Worktops
Norfolk Oak's American Black Walnut Classic Butcher's Block worktops are quite simply the most stunning dark hardwood worktops in the world. The wonderful dark chocolate colours combined with the most amazing grain structure give our Walnut Worktops a depth and beauty which is unparalled.
The fact that we only use furniture grade Walnut to make these worktops is really immediately evident from the photographs. In fact it is very difficult to photograph walnut worktops as they are so dark. It is really impossible to compare these walnut worktops with any others, particularly European Walnut worktops - please see our page 'About Walnut' for more information about this and other 'Walnut pretenders'.
We have worked hard to make these walnut worktops as beautiful as you now see them. We did try and make some with lower grades of walnut as an experiment, but the results clearly showed there is no way around it; you have to make these worktops from the best lumber. Of course this means that the price can't be considered cheap, but considering the quality of the raw material they are perhaps the most outstanding value of any worktops in our range.
Making a Classic Walnut worktop is actually quite a lot harder than making a single wide stave or a two join worktop. The reason is the number of individual staves that make up the worktop. The staves are between 55 mm and 85mm wide, and average about 500 mm long. So in one 4 metre classic worktop there may be as many as 70 -80 individual pieces of walnut. Each one must work in with the rest or what should be a beautiful and functional work surface becomes a haphazard patchwork.
Even when sanding a Classic Walnut worktop the quality of the lumber shows through. A few runs with a 180 grit belt sander makes the surface glow and shine, but adding oil to a clean sanded surface is a revelation. Just like watching an old black and white photograph become exposed in the silver halide tank, the oil suddenly brings the grain to life.
In fact a Black Walnut worktop will continue to darken for a few months. The grain will stand out more and the inner beauty of the Walnut will be increasingly enhanced.
