Wooden Upstands
Upstands are not just the saviour of the worktop fitter; they finish a worktop beautifully. Sometimes known as a splash-back, they neatly cover the expansion gap one has to leave between the worktop and the wall (about 3-5mm) and provide a wonderfully aesthetic return in to the wall. However the secret benefit of upstands is covering up all sorts of problems; dealing with walls which aren't straight and corners which are never quite 90 degrees. Being 19mm thick, that expansion gap can be 3 mm at one end, 17 mm in the middle and 8 mm at the other end and no one would ever know. Those little mistakes made with the saw just melt away. Upstands have a maximum height of 71 mm, but can be cut down if required.
We used to make our upstands with a 'tail' which slipped behind the worktop, so the worktop would just fit in to a groove. Instead of aleviating any fitting problems though, all it did was create more. We can custom make them that way on request if you would like, but wouldn't recommend it.
Fixing the upstands has been made simple with the advent of 'no more nails' glue - all you do is push the upstand into place, hold it firmly for a couple of minutes and that's it.
